Disc Golf

Much like traditional golf, the object of disc golf is to complete each hole in the fewest number of ‘strokes’. Formalized as a sport in the 1970’s, disc golf differs from the traditional version in that instead of a ball and clubs players use a flying disc. Players throw the discs from a tee area to the target, which is the ‘hole’. The ‘hole’ is usually an elevated metal basket. Once thrown, players track the number of throws and consecutively make shots from the spot where their last throw landed until they reaching the ‘hole’.

Although Recreation & Parks does not yet host a Disc Golf program, Wicomico County’s Schumaker Park is home to an 18-hole disc golf course, affectionately called “the Schu” by regular players. The course is home to league play on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and also to special events, such as the Schumaker Spring Shootout and Father’s Day Doubles. According to a league member, “the multiple tees & pins on every hole allow everyone from the true rec player to the top pro to have an enjoyable round”.
